How To Make an Espresso

The Moka is an Italian coffee staple created by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933. Its name was inspired by Mokha, a city in Yemen where there are many plantations of a great variety of coffee. The Bialetti Moka then became the classic home coffee maker, consisting of a base-kettle that is filled with water, a filter where the ground coffee is poured, and a top-fireplace that contains the coffee spilled from boiling.

Though it has become tradition to grab your daily espresso at a local bar, it is still useful to know how to make your own as it may save you the occasional euro. (c'mon, that’s €30 a month!)

Here are 8 steps to help you become an expert in no time!

Step 1.)

Get yourself a Moka machine and some ground coffee. You can find both of these items at your local supermarket!

Step 2.)

Fill the base with cold water up to the level of the valve and insert the filter.

Step 3.)

Fill the filter completely with ground coffee, but do not press the powder.

Step 4.)

Make sure the filter and rubber seal are in place. Screw the two parts of the moka tightly.

Step 5.)

Put the moka on the stove and always keep at a low heat!

Step 6.)

Remove the moka from the heat as soon as the coffee rises.

Step 7.)

Stir the coffee with a teaspoon before pouring it into your cup.

Step 8.)

Lastly, do not forget to rinse the mocha with hot water and let it dry completely before screwing it back on!
