how to get Residenza (residency) in milan
In Italy, individuals must register their residency (residenza) within 8 days of arrival if they are non-EU nationals and intend to stay for more than 90 days.
For EU nationals, they must register with the local Anagrafe (Registry Office) within 90 days if they plan to stay in Italy for more than three months.
Failure to register within the required timeframe may result in fines and difficulties in accessing public services.
how to apply
Step #1
Obtain a valid Permesso di Soggiorno: Before you can apply for local residency, non-EU citizens must first obtain a valid Permesso.
EU citizens can otherwise ignore this step.
Step #2
Register a Codice Fiscale: You'll need a registered Codice Fiscale, which is the Italian equivalent of a social security number. You can obtain one from us or by visiting an Agenzia delle Entrate office by way of appointment.
Step #3
Find a place to live: You must have a valid domicile address in Milan to establish residency, through either demonstrable property ownership or a registered rental contract.
Step #4
Gather your documents: For your residency application, you'll need to gather a number of documents, including your:
Passport,
Visa/Permesso (non-EU citizens),
Rental contract / Property deeds,
Evidence of employment/self employment OR Evidence of self sufficiency*
*if you’re establishing residency with no formal income, applicants must provide valid health insurance and a bank statement from the previous three (3) months, indicating savings of at least €6,000.00. Evidences of self sufficiency are requested exclusively for the residency requests of foreign nationals, including EU citizens, currently unemployed within the Italian territory.
Be sure to check the case specific requirements for your situation with the Anagrafe or have us do it for you!
STEP #5
Visit your Anagrafe: Once you have assembled copies of your required documents, you can schedule an appointment at your local Anagrafe in order to submit your residency request.
IVE SUBMITTED EVERYTHING, NOW WHAT...
Wait for the Attestato di Registrazione (residency certificate): Once you have submitted your residency request at the Anagrafe, the 45-day verification period commences. Within these 45-days, your sponsoring documents will be verified and a visit at random will be conducted at the indicated domicile address. In the absence of the applicant at the domicile address, a letter will be left at the address to establish another visit.
If a visit does not occur within the 45-day verification period, as is relatively common in larger municipalities, the residency request is approved by default on the 45th day. Following the verification period, return to the Anagrafe to collect your certificate of residency. This certificate can be subsequently utilised to obtain a national ID card (Carta d’Identita) , a public healthcare card (Tessera Sanitaria), or to open a local bank account!
