opening a bank account in Italy

If you are from a non-EU country, you may find yourself regularly sending and/or converting money in Italy from home or worse yet paying a commission with your debit card for each individual payment (we've all been there!).

To avoid this, the easiest solution is to sign up for a free bank account that handles Euro currency, offers commission free card payments, as well as international transfers with competitive exchange rates.

High Street Banks

To open a standard account with most High Street Banks in Italy, you will need to book an appointment at the branch closest to your residential address, presenting 3 documents;

  • a valid form of valid ID

  • certificate of residency

  • proof of domicile address (eg. a utility bill or rental contract in your name)

Opening a bank account in Italy can be very challenging, particularly if you don’t speak Italian. If you have any concerns or would otherwise require on-site assistance, check out our Support Services.

Online Banks

If you don’t require a physical branch or perhaps you’re just staying in Italy for a short period, you may prefer to look at popular online providers, all of which provide; free base-level accounts, free debit cards & commission free international payments.
