Leonardo’s Secret Vineyard

You know how it is – after a hard day at work on a world-famous fresco, all you want is somewhere peaceful to relax with a glass of wine. This is just what Leonardo da Vinci enjoyed on Corso Magenta, 65 for several years from 1498.

As Leonardo, then 46, was finishing the Last Supper, the Duke of Milan gifted him a property including its vineyard on Corso Magenta. The artist came from a long line of winemakers and he also hoped owning a plot of land would allow him to finally claim his own Milanese citizenship (even Leonardo needed the Permesso!).

Leonardo was deeply attached to the property: so much so, in his will, he left it to two of his most loyal servants to maintain.
