What Is Ferragosto?
Ferragosto derives from the name “Feriae Augusti,” a Latin name for the festivals of Emperor Augustus that started in 18 BC!
Now celebrated every august 15th, it marks peak summer season in Italy and the day many Italians look forward to (or not). Why, you ask? It’s the start or the end of a 2 week vacation!
August is the month where we all run away from the heat, asphalt melting temperatures in our cities and literally escape off to the beach before life and responsibilities creep back up again.
Most shops and restaurants remain closed during this time and the majority of cities become ghost towns. That being said, cultural sites and pools remain open!
At last, contrary to popular belief: if you can’t make it to the beach it’s still a peaceful way to enjoy Milan as all the noise is gone and traffic fades away.
