how to get your codice fiscale
The first essential document you will require in Italy will be your tax code, also known as your 'Codice Fiscale'. It is your unique identification number during your stay and is required to perform most essential tasks including; signing rental agreements, opening bank accounts, obtaining a mobile SIM card or even joining a gym!
how to apply
STEP #1
Gather the necessary documents: You’ll need your passport OR a form of Italian ID (Carta di Identita), and a proof of address in Italy such as a rental contract or evidence of temporary accommodation. If you are a non-EU citizen, you will further require a valid visa demonstrating a legal right of stay within the Italian territory.
Step #2
Schedule an appointment at the Agenzia delle Entrate (Revenue Office): Appointment waiting times in Milan are generally between 1-2 weeks, therefore we highly recommend pre-booking an appointment through the following link to coincide with your arrival date. If you are applying for your own Codice Fiscale from the Agenzia Entrate website, the following steps apply for first-time appointments:
On the first page, select 'per te stesso' (for yourself), check the box 'prima richiesta di codice fiscale' (request your first codice fiscale), and then select 'Avanti' (proceed).
You'll then be presented with a page to provide your personal contact details; complete the mandatory data fields and select 'Avanti' (proceed).
The subsequent page will provide you with a list of Agenzia Entrate branches from which you can choose the most convenient address and select the next available appointment date/time that corresponds with your arrival date/time.
Once you’ve confirmed an appointment availability, an appointment ticket will be sent to your provided email address. Save or print this document as you’ll need to present it for your upcoming appointment!
Step #3
Attend your appointment: Be sure to bring along your personal documents listed in Step #1 (both original versions and photocopies). Present your appointment ticket at the entrance and take a new ticket from the automated machine in the waiting area. Once your number is called on the screen, go up to the corresponding operator window; be prepared to fill out the AA48 application forms and to answer any general questions in Italian language. You'll subsequently receive your formal Codice Fiscale certificate within a few minutes in conclusion of your registration.
It’s worth noting that some regions may have slightly different requirements or procedures, so be sure to check with your local Agenzia Entrate for specific details if you are applying outside of Milan.
Pro Tips:
Do NOT wait indefinitely for your embassy or consulate to provide your Codice Fiscale. Although some foreign consulates and embassies may submit a Codice Fiscale request to the Agenzia Entrate on behalf of a foreign national, waiting times for intermediary requests can take months. It’s therefore always advisable to pre-book an appointment at your local Agenzia Entrate to coincide with your arrival.
Do NOT anticipate for English-speaking staff at public offices, including at the Agenzia Entrate. Although many Italians speak English, many do not. It should be expressly understood that there exists no obligation for public offices within the Italian territory to provide services in English language. For those without basic Italian language skills, it’s always advisable to attend appointments with a local translator.
