how to get your codice fiscale
The first essential document you will require in Italy will be your tax code, also known as your 'Codice Fiscale'. It is your unique identification number during your stay and is required to perform most essential tasks including; signing rental agreements, opening bank accounts, obtaining a mobile SIM card or even joining a gym!
how to apply
STEP #1
Gather the necessary documents: You’ll need your passport or a form of Italian ID (Carta di Identita), as well as proof of address in Italy. If you are a non-EU citizen, you will further require a valid visa for Italy.
Step #2
Visit the Agenzia delle Entrate (we personally recommend the new branch on Via Lario!): This is the Italian tax agency that issues the Codice Fiscale. You can visit any tax office in Italy to apply for your Codice Fiscale. Be sure to bring along your personal documents and take a ticket from the machine upon arrival. Be prepared to fill out an application form and complete a short interview in Italian language.
PRO TIP: If you don’t speak Italian, we can do the application for you!
Step #3
Wait for your Codice Fiscale to be issued: The process usually takes just a few minutes, and your Codice Fiscale will be issued on the spot. You'll receive a formal certification with a barcode that you can use for a variety of purposes, such as signing a contract or opening a bank account.
It’s worth noting that some regions may have slightly different requirements or procedures, so be sure to check with your local Agenzia Entrate for specific details.
